Church of Kootwijk
From Rhenen Zandleven set out to paint nature. He went several times to Kootwijk to record the sand-dunes, and also the small church in the centre of Kootwijk interested him. In 1920 he made a chalk-drawing of this church, and also he painted it in oil.

The chalk-drawing (JAZ-1920-043) was sold in 1914 as part of the heritage of H. van Ingen-Arbeiter in an auction of the Notarishuis in Arnheim, realizing 60 guilders. Since then the location of the drawing is unknown.

The oil-painting (JAZ-1920-042) was 'discovered' as part of a family-heritage a few years ago. On the back a sticker was found with the text "Kerkje in de zon" ("Church in the sun"). The heiress remembered that the previous owner called it the church in Kootwijk. If you're able to go to Kootwijk it will be clear: Yes, this is the church of Kootwijk.

In 2000 a booklet was issued with the title: "Kootwijk, een parel in het zand" ("Kootwijk, a pearl in the sand"), the history of a village on the Veluwe (ISBN 90-70150-45-X). The front of the booklet shows this same painting.
