Barn

A barn is a simple, short name for this early work of Zandleven. it was first noticed at the Mak van Waay auction in 1959, whereafter it was part of the Dordrecht exhibition in 1962. Today this painting can be found in the Regional Museum Het Rondeel in Rhenen.

The farm with thatched roof is owned by the Museum Van Bommel van Dam in Venlo. I've only this bad copy of the painting and hardly any other information. So a visit to Venlo is necessary. But even from this very vague picture it can be seen that this must be the same barn: the light-coloured slant stripe on the left, the location of the barn-door etc are convincing enough. In the meantime, the Museum in Venlo has confirmed by e-mail the similarity.

A question that remains is: Zandleven moved in 1902 to Wijk aan Zee and in 1904 to Gorssel in Gelderland. After 7 years, did he go to the same barn to paint it again? Or did he copy the first painting?
